Burlington is perfectly positioned between the Piedmont Triad with Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, and the Research Triangle with Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. This midpoint city is rapidly growing with a population of approximately 52,000, making it the 17th largest city in the state. Burlington is also located between the Piedmont Triad International Airport and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, making it highly accessible for travel.

Burlington won a Certified National Main Street award between the years of 2010 and 2014 for its revitalized downtown area, which is the center of activity for residents and visitors alike. This charming and historic area is a popular hub for dining and shopping.

The city operates several parks under the Burlington Parks System, including the popular City Park with the iconic Dentzel Carousel as its focal point. This is also the site of the annual Burlington Carousel Festival, celebrating the historical ride with food, music, activities and plenty of family-friendly fun. Additionally, there are four private schools located in town, providing a wide range of options for residents. Due to Burlington’s central location in this technology- and education-focused region, there are plenty of options for higher education within reach. Elon University is located on the outskirts of Burlington, and several institutions are nearby, including University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.

History

The first settlers in Burlington were Quakers, German farmers and Scots-Irish immigrants when the North Carolina Railroad expanded across the state. The area surrounding Burlington was a perfect midway point to set up repair shops, which were constructed in 1859 to deal with mechanical troubles. A town then sprouted up around the shops, consisting of a church, bank, hotel and restaurant. The town was originally called Company Shops.

After the Civil War, the railroad shifted operations to Spencer, North Carolina, and the town of Company Shops altered its focus and changed its name to Burlington in 1893. During the Industrial Revolution, Burlington became a textile and manufacturing town, and eventually created Burlington Industries, which is now headquartered in Greensboro.
